After a well-deserved holiday, we're back in full swing! Our first gig is back at Jes Theetuin just outside Bourtange (Wollingboerweg 18, 9545 VC Bourtange) on Sunday, October 5th. And guess what, the gig is free (although a contribution towards the guitar case is always welcome). We'll be playing from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., but you're welcome from 12:30 p.m. And of course, we'll be catering for the needs of everyone with coffee, tea, and pastries. In short, let's start the autumn right with this relaxed and easygoing performance at a wonderful location with a fantastic host and hostess.

We can look back on two successful performances. The performance with Drizzle at the Kleine Kerkje in Gieterveen on May 10th was a wonderful experience. It's so much fun to play with other enthusiastic, kind, and humorous people. They say music brings people together, and we think that's true. In any case, we've gained two new musical friends. We're definitely looking forward to seeing them again. We're also very curious about the recordings that were made.
On May 31st, we had the pleasure of playing at the Culturen met de Buren event in Apppingedam. We had a beautiful location in Joan Pastoor's garden where we could play on a real stage. The weather was fantastic, of course, and the audience was great. Joan was a fantastic host, and we thoroughly enjoyed performing our songs. We'd love to see you again for the 2026 edition!
Now, the wonderful Westerwolde Rijgt 2025 event is on the horizon, an anniversary edition because it's the 10th year it's being organized, and we're participating for the 5th time (so a lustrum for us).
We're very pleased to be playing again at Kopje Genieten in Sellingen on Saturday, June 21st, starting at noon. We're gradually considering ourselves their house band. It's always a joy to perform there, not least because of the delicious cakes you can enjoy and the hospitality we experience every time.
We're also very excited to be playing again at Jes Theetuin in Bourtange. Two fantastic and kind people who are passionate about their work and pamper us and the audience. We'll be playing there again on Saturday, June 28th, starting at 12 noon.

After a quiet winter, nature is slowly awakening; plants and trees are blooming again, and you'll be awakened in the morning by the beautiful song of blackbirds. It's also time for FLATLANDISH to get active again. We've already got a few more gigs planned. On May 10th, we'll be playing with Drizzle.
We'll be playing in the cozy church in Gieterveen. Keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for more details.
On May 31st, we'll be playing at the "Culturen met de Buren" festival in the beautiful town of Appingedam. More details will follow soon, which you can find on this website and our Facebook page.
Of course, we'll also be participating in the wonderful "Westerwolde Rijgt" event, which takes place from June 20th to 29th. This year marks our 10th anniversary, so we'll be offering a special performance with many beautiful gardens, unique locations, art, and music. FLATLANDISH will be playing at "Kopje Genieten" in the beautiful town of Sellingen on June 21st and at Jes Theetuin in picturesque Bourtange on June 28th. This will be our fifth anniversary at Westerwolde Rijgt, and we're thrilled to have been invited back to play at this fantastic event.

July 13, 2024
On September 1st, we've been invited to play at Jes Theetuin just outside Bourtange. Apparently, we had a great time at Westerwolde Rijgt. We're thrilled to be playing again at this beautiful venue and with these lovely people! We're expected to start around 2:00 PM.
NEW GUITAR: We've also added a new guitar to our collection. This time, a Lowden O32c, a large guitar with Indian Rosewood back & sides and a European Spruce top. It has a beautiful, full, open, and clear sound. As usual, we also had to say goodbye to a guitar. The BSG OM46f unfortunately had to be retired and will likely be available for purchase soon at TFOA in Dedemsvaart. Well, there's never a dull moment at Flatlandish when it comes to guitars.

-------------
May 20, 2024
On August 3rd and 4th, we'll be participating again in the Atelier- en Kunstroute De Beetse & Ter Borg and will be playing at "Kopje Genieten" in Sellingen. Well, we're slowly becoming the house band at this beautiful and cozy establishment. Here, besides all sorts of other treats and drinks, you'll find the tastiest cakes in the north, and perhaps even the entire country. This performance will be special because we'll be joined once again by Pieter (violin & upright bass) and Franca (vocals). They stood in for JJ during last year's summer vacation and have been good musical friends of ours for years.

April 21, 2024
It's almost that time of year again when the wonderful Westerwolde Rijgt event kicks off. In the beautiful Westerwolde, various people are once again opening their unique gardens to the public. Regional artists will exhibit their artwork, and the whole thing will be enhanced by musical attractions of various kinds. The performances range from rock and choral music to medieval music, pop, and singer-songwriters. In short, two weeks of enjoyment. Information can be found on the Westerwolde Rijgt 2024 website: Westerwolde Rijgt 2024
Flatlandish will also be performing again during this wonderful event, on Sunday, June 16th, at Kopje Genieten in Sellingen and Saturday, June 22nd, at Jes Theetuin | Bourtange - Facebook in Bourtange.
These performances are always characterized by a relaxed and accessible atmosphere and are among our favorites. We hope to see and speak to you there. See you then!

FLATLANDISH 'on Holiday' at Kopje Genieten in Sellingen on September 5th and 6th. Sometimes you have to make do during holiday periods when one of us is absent. JJ and Alma were enjoying their well-deserved vacation in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern while FLATLANDISH was performing at the Atelierroute in Westerwolde. Fortunately, we were able to arrange fantastic guest musicians for these two days. Pieter and Franca, good and old acquaintances of ours, were kind enough to step in. Pieter with his fantastic improvisation skills on violin and upright bass, and Franca with her fantastic voice who provided the vocals. Peter was therefore surrounded by great musicians, and it was two fantastic days. We have now become old acquaintances of Christine from 'Kopje Genieten', and it was a joy for everyone to play and sing there. While beautiful art could be admired outside, Christine and her wonderful staff provided refreshments with their now world-famous cakes. See the 'Music' section for a video of this wonderful weekend.

Flatlandish has been asked to provide the musical entertainment for a Welzijn Westerwolde evening. This is a private performance for the employees of Welzijn Westerwolde and will take place at De Meet, Dorpsstraat 6 in Bellingwolde. So, another 'home game' for Peter. NEW CUSTOM BSG GUITAR FOR PETER IN THE MAKING
The decision has been made, as Peter has decided to go for a BSG P31F, a parlor guitar with cocobolo rosewood. So, it's not the BSG P27F with Indian rosewood. Well, a good example is a good example. He also made some custom modifications, namely a slightly wider neck, 48 mm, rosewood binding, and gold tuners with ebony knobs. The guitar has a slotted headstock, meaning an open headstock like on classical guitars. In short, a beautiful guitar on paper. Now let's hope the guitar sounds as good as it looks, but with Jan Stovicek of BSG, the chance of a disappointment is extremely small. And we can safely say that we speak from experience, considering the number of BSG guitars we have (owned).

NEW PERFORMANCES and ..... NEW GUITARS
It's never boring at Flatlandish, as there's always plenty of news to report. For example, we'll be performing again at the wonderful Westerwolde Rijgt 2023 event. This event features beautiful gardens with free public access, combined with art exhibitions and live music. The event takes place from June 16th to 25th. So, there's a good chance of nice weather and the perfect opportunity to see all the beautiful things the Westerwolde region has to offer.
FLATLANDISH will be performing twice during this event. On Friday, June 16th, we'll be playing in the afternoon at Gasterij Natuurlijk Smeerling and on Saturday, June 24th, in the afternoon at the 'Ol Raive' garden in Sellingen. We hope to see you there!
There's also news to report regarding our guitars. Peter recently purchased an Eastman OO E40 Deluxe. A beautiful, small guitar with a brilliant sound and beautiful aesthetics. However, after having it for a few days, he discovered that the guitar had so-called "wolf tones" in several positions. These are dead tones where the string sounds somewhat dull and lacks normal sustain. We then went back to TFOA to see if this could be fixed. The guitar was put through the pleck machine, but unfortunately without the desired result. Peter then decided to order a new guitar from BSG, a BSG parlor guitar. This is an even smaller guitar model and will be ready in about three months. More information will follow!
Meanwhile, JJ has also bought a new guitar, also a BSG, but a larger model, a BSG GA31F with cocobolo sides and backs (see the photos on the GALLERY page). GA stands for Grand Auditorium; previously, this was the J-model at BSG. So Peter's J40F is the same model as JJ's GA31F. A beautiful guitar in both looks and sound. And now, the guitar shopping is over. We now have almost all models in our range: a baritone (Lakewood), two grand auditoriums (BSG), two grand fingerstyles (Waanders and Anuenue), two dreadnoughts (Furch and Martin), an OM (BSG), a parlor (BSG), two classical guitars (Juan Hernandez and handmade nameless guitar), a flamenco guitar (Hermanos Camps) and an electric guitar (Fender). It's getting difficult to choose what to bring to a gig....

PERFORMANCE 'KOPJE GENIETEN' AND ....... ANOTHER NEW GUITAR
On Saturday, January 14th, we had a private performance at Kopje Genieten in honor of Christine's birthday. She's the owner of this beautiful oasis in the Sellingen woods, where you can buy the most delicious cakes and snacks after a refreshing walk in the beautiful nature around Sellingen, Westerwolde. We had a wonderful evening in every way. The audience was fantastic, interested, and enthusiastic. In short, it was a fantastic and enjoyable, but also very relaxing evening. During this performance, we also used our newest guitar, which this time we purchased not as individuals but as a band from the Fellowship of Acoustics in Dedemsvaart: a Furch Yellow D CR Masters Choice. What a fantastic guitar, especially for the price. A fantastic workhorse that plays incredibly easily and delivers a very stable, clear, and balanced sound. In short, a fantastic addition.

OH DEAR, ANOTHER NEW GUITAR, BUT ALSO A FAREWELL TO AN 'OLDER' GUITAR
Where Peter left off last time, JJ takes over. Well, he couldn't really stay behind, and it was inevitable that sooner or later there would be another change in Flatlandish's guitar lineup. JJ couldn't resist when a beautiful guitar by Irish luthier Dermot McIlroy appeared in the latest TFOA newsletter. The mistake he had made in the past by trading in his McIlroy A56 custom guitar could now be rectified. And so he became the owner of a beautiful McIlroy A78 with Amazon Rosewood back & sides and a beautiful Old Growth Flamed Redwood top (see the 'Gallery' page on this website for pictures). Unfortunately, an equally beautiful guitar also had to be said goodbye. The beautiful BSG D37F with also an Amazon Rosewood / Bear claw Spruce top, remained behind in Dedemsvaart where it can soon be purchased. For many, BSG is an unknown guitar brand and that is a shame because these are fantastic guitars that are in the same league in terms of quality as Lowden and McIlroy and many American brands such as Taylor, Martin and Gibson. They are hand-built guitars, unlike Martin, Gibson and Taylor (factory guitars) that have much more to offer aesthetically than the brands mentioned and they deserve a much wider audience. Jan Stovicek, the founder and builder of BSG guitars from the Czech Republic, is a true artist when it comes to making high-quality and aesthetically beautiful guitars. You can see and play them at TFOA in Dedemsvaart, the most beautiful and comprehensive guitar shop in Europe. A day of browsing and playing the most diverse guitars is definitely worth it. The hospitality and friendliness in this exceptionally beautiful shop are unparalleled and unmatched in the Netherlands. They also cater to the culinary needs with delicious sandwiches, coffee, soft drinks, etc. You might just leave with this beautiful BSG D37F. Also check out the Jan Stovicek/BSG website.

DOUBLE PERFORMANCE with UNICORN - July 30, 2:30 PM - Bosweg 10, Hoogersmilde CANCELLED
On Saturday, July 30, we'll be playing with Unicorn at De Nieuwe Bentepol in Hoogersmilde. We're no strangers to this, as we previously performed a double act there with Ilse Oversier. Now with Unicorn, an Irish musician. Swing-Folk band, as they call themselves on their website: Celtic folk and swing with Klezmer, Shanties, and Bluegrass excursions. This promises to be a wonderful mix of swinging folk music and inspiring acoustic listening music. Tickets are available from Peter Bes and Marijke Gruunenberg: €15 (€16.50 at the door).
Send an email to Marijke: marijke@glastro.com to order tickets.

ANOTHER NEW GUITAR.....sigh
As was whispered in the previous news item, another guitar has been added to our collection, as Peter has purchased another one. Unfortunately, another guitar has also had to go: his BSG D37F. In its place has come the aNueNue LS700, a guitar that once belonged to Eddie van der Meer, a well-known Dutch fingerstyle guitarist. guitarist. So, not just any guitar, for several reasons. It's a special guitar to behold, has an exceptionally beautiful sound, and the playability is phenomenal. In short, another very beautiful guitar. See the Gallery for some images of this special guitar.

ANOTHER NEW GUITAR
Peter is sometimes inimitable, even for JJ. On Saturday, April 30, we spent a day at TFOA in Dedemsvaart because JJ's Camps flamenco needed a tune-up and his BSG OM42F was getting new tuners. Peter had brought his Ibanez semi-hollow-body guitar as a trade-in because he had his heart set on a different baritone. At TFOA, there were currently five different baritone guitars on display: an Avalon, a Furch, two Lakewoods, and a Rozawood. After much playing and listening, two were finally left: the Rozawood and one of the Lakewoods. Ultimately, the Lakewood J32 baritone left over, and the deal with Rudi/Coen could be made. The good news for the folks back home was that we came home with as many guitars as we left. Although... That aNueNue LS700 hanging there made us both beam with delight, so who knows...

December 16, 2021
Time to share some news with you again, because a few things have happened. First of all, we've been invited to play at a small-scale music festival with a unique organization. On Saturday, January 22nd, we'll be playing at the Fisherman's Friend Festival: three musicians at three different venues in Oostwolde (Westerkwartier). Who's coming? Besides Flatlandish, Jason Staal and Hans Betlem will also be playing. The special thing is that after a 30-minute mini-concert, the audience will switch venues, allowing them to attend three concerts that afternoon. Even better, at least for the audience, it's free. The musicians will play their repertoire for whatever the generous donor is willing to pay. Drinks are, of course, available for purchase at the various venues. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, contrary to what was previously announced, the festival will be held in the afternoon from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Not in the evening! We'll all gather at the meeting point and then head to the various concert venues; the meeting point is Munnikevaart 15, 9828 PM Oostwold. Check the website soon under "Performances" and keep an eye on our Facebook page!

Peter has also expanded his guitar collection with a so-called baritone guitar, a Guild BT240e. A baritone guitar has a longer scale and is usually tuned a quarter lower than a regular guitar, so B-E-A-D-F-sharp-B instead of E-A-D-G-B-E. Now, we normally tune our guitars a semitone lower than usual, so E-flat-G-sharp-C-sharp-F-sharp-A-sharp-E-flat. Either way, it's a guitar with plenty of volume and deep bass, a kind of cello among guitars, so to speak. We're very curious to see how this guitar will integrate into our repertoire.
Finally, our floor monitors have finally arrived. Based partly on the advice of JS Audio, we purchased the Flexsys FMX 10 from dBTechnologies. It's never a bad thing to be able to hear yourself a little on stage. For the techies, see https://www.dbtechnologies.com/en/products/flexsys/fmx10/

We had a fantastic concert last night at the Nieuwe Bentepol in Hoogersmilde, with the Ilse Oversier Trio, who kicked things off and gave a beautifully understated and introspective performance. Our performance was after the intermission and was a blast, thanks in part to the enthusiastic audience and the fantastic sound engineer Johan Bakker! We would like to sincerely thank the owners of the Nieuwe Bentepol, where you can also enjoy delicious food, and the organizers CAS, and especially Peter Bes, for this opportunity. We thoroughly enjoyed it! We hope to see you again!

A visit to the website or the store of our authorized supplier usually yields some rewards. When a BSG OM featuring African Blackwood appeared in the weekly newsletter, it naturally had consequences. A guitar with African Blackwood has become something of a Holy Grail. Peter, of course, already had his BSG J40F with African Blackwood, and JJ was eagerly searching for one. When this opportunity arose, JJ was unstoppable. The guitar was reserved by the guys at TFOA in Dedemsvaart, and a week later, it changed hands. This came with a heavy heart, however, as JJ's BSG OM33F had to make way for it. That was a difficult moment, especially since it was such a fantastic guitar with the same Holy Grail wood, Brazilian Rosewood. Anyway, some things you just have to do, and that's what happened. Pictures of the guitar are now on the Facebook page and website, and a soundbite is available on Soundloud. If you're curious, click on: She (Ben Abrahams cover) - Flatlandish by Flatlandish (soundcloud.com)

JJuly 12, 2021
We have another addition to the family. A long-cherished wish for JJ has come true. He has been the proud owner of a flamenco guitar for over a week. A day at the Fellowship of Acoustics in Dedemsvaart always costs us money, and this time was no exception. JJ purchased a Hermanos Camps flamenca blanca A. A very beautiful and good flamenco guitar with an excellent price-quality ratio. You won't find anything better for the price. The blanca sounds slightly more flamenco than the negra (often with an Indian rosewood body). The blanca has a spruce top with a cypress body, which is often a little shallower than a regular classical guitar. This produces a slightly brighter and clearer sound with slightly less sustain. If you'd like to hear the guitar, you can listen to a short soundbite on Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/macdoff/sound-bite-hergest-ridge-op-de-camps-primera-a-blanca
You can also come to one of our performances :)

The decision has been made: the Flatlandish double bill with Ilse Oversier & band will go ahead! The concert will take place on November 12th at the Nieuwe Bentepol in Hoogersmilde (Bosweg 10). Start time: 8:30 PM. End time: 10:30 PM. Tickets are available on the website of the Cultural Council of Smilde: https://cultureleraadsmilde.nl/event/concert-ilse-oversier-en-flatlandish/

April 11, 2021
Dealing with and adhering to the Covid-19 measures is undoubtedly difficult for all of us, but the end of the worst of the misery is gradually coming into view, although we don't yet see it directly in the hospitals. In any case, there are reasons to be optimistic. We are also thinking of all those who have been deeply affected by the virus in some way, either personally or in their immediate surroundings.
Meanwhile, we are fortunately still free from the virus and are still learning new songs, although we are both busy with our work and therefore have limited time. In any case, the rehearsals are a pleasure and a highlight for us.
We've now been asked by the Smilde Cultural Council to perform in November with Ilse Oversier and her musicians. She's a fantastic singer with beautiful songs and wonderful violin and cello accompaniment. Definitely worth coming for, at least if COVID-19 restrictions allow it by then.
We've also changed a bit in our instrumentation. Peter has traded in his Guild D55 for a BSG D-37F. This will be the fourth BSG in our collection. A beautiful and fantastic guitar with a magnificent sound. Together with JJ's BSG D-37F, they make a wonderful duo.
In the meantime, we'll continue playing and, like all of you, we hope for better times when we can meet again in person and in good health!

January 17, 2021
Almost a year later, and our freedom is still severely restricted by the SARS-Covid-19 virus. In fact, the new genetic variants are making life even more difficult for us as human beings, despite the fact that the vaccination campaign has begun. We miss freedom and human contact. We hope that we, as humanity, will emerge from this situation better and wiser, learning to prioritize better, with more attention for each other, the world, the environment, and the animal kingdom. We remain optimistic and hope that sometime this year we can perform in front of a real audience again, because that's the best thing there is. In the meantime, we play together regularly and are expanding our repertoire with beautiful new songs. We've also made some adjustments to our instrumentation. JJ felt he needed to trade in his McIlroy A56c for a new BSG D37F. A beautiful guitar with a fantastic sound. It's always painful to part with a guitar, especially one as good as the McIlroy, but sometimes it's hard to resist, or maybe it is... Anyway, we now own three BSG guitars, and both Peter and JJ are thrilled with these fantastic guitars, built in the Czech Republic by Jan Stovícek, which offer unparalleled value for money. Highly recommended!

It won't have escaped your notice that we are living in surreal and serious times due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This affects almost everyone in one way or another, sometimes very dramatically and sadly. For now, we are healthy, but life is uncertain and completely changed. This also means that several of our performances are cancelled. We are thinking of the contribution we were supposed to make during Remembrance Day on May 4th in the Scheemder Church in Scheemda, but the always wonderful Westerwolde Rijgt event has also unfortunately been cancelled. It is what it is, and we have to deal with this reality. We hope for better times and are convinced that they will definitely come again! We hope to see and speak to you then!

Another change in our gear. JJ traded in his BSG D33F for a Waanders Grand Symphony, and Peter bought a semi-solid Ibanez JSM 100. The electric guitar adds a new element to our playing, but rest assured, we'll be using it sparingly, and Metallica won't be in our repertoire (yet).

Today, January 19, 2019, the FLATLANDISH website was finally officially launched with its own domain name. We're happy with the result, and we hope you are too. Of course, it's a work in progress, and the website will be updated regularly. For example, we hope to eventually replace the rehearsal recordings with more professional footage, add more photos of ourselves, and perhaps even show videos. We also hope that there will be more to see under the PERFORMANCES tab soon. Who knows... It would be great if you left us a message. We'd really appreciate it. Enjoy our website. -Flatlandish-
